'The Crucial discovery was made that, in order to become painting, the universe seen by the artist had to become a private one created by himself' André Malraux (1901 -1976). In order to truly understand Schiffmacker's art, it's vital to learn about her personal life. She has always sought for a means of expression and this quest has taken her from the stage to the canvas and from France to Indonesia. Based in her Bali studio for the past ten years, it is here that she has managed to fufil Malraux's proclamation about true art. Whilst being obviously contemporary, her art possesses an 'old world' feel of traditionalism. This is manifested in her work through the use of the circle a symbol of the greater universe and the strength at its core-present since ancient Greek and Buddhist civilisations. Schiffmacker's employment of Sanskrit-like letters and the mandala bring forth feelings of eternity and balance. She has come full circle 25,000 years ago when this form was first drawn to show the union between the physical and spiritual world. And the circle also evinces the artist's passage of artistic, intellectual and spiritual progress- a creation of Schiffmacker's own 'universe'by mapping and plotting her perception of culture and time. The Door, The Key, The Anchor. The Blue Map, these artwork are films on the reel of her life. It is le cinemascope.
